Advising and Student Success Student Assistant
The College of Behavioral & Social Sciences’ Advising and Student Success student assistant position requires someone who can handle multiple tasks simultaneously, who is punctual, who understands and abides by confidentiality policies, and someone who can provide quality work in every task. In this position, student assistants report to the Senior Coordinator, Advising and Student Success, and also support each staff member on the Advising and Student Success Team. Each day, the Student assistants will be provided with a list of projects and clear instructions. The Advising and Student Success Team includes the Senior Coordinator, Advising and Student Success and several professional staff advisors.
As the first person to greet the public at the two Student Success Centers, the student assistants must have good customer service skills to be successful in this position. With over 1,000 student visits to Centers each semester, student assistants must be able to handle a high-volume workload and work with a broad and diverse student population. Student assistants are required to use a multi-line phone system, assist callers and be able to re-direct the callers to the appropriate party. Student Assistants will be responsible for a variety of duties, including but not limited to:
- Working 1:1 and in small groups with BSS students on matters such as academic success, getting connected and involved on campus, and accessing campus resources
- Entering and tracking data related to the programs they are involved in
- Conducting phone campaigns to non-enrolled students or prospective students for the College
- Assisting staff advisors with advising-related projects such as checking enrollment status or reviewing degree progress reports
- Maintaining office equipment/supplies, which include ensuring the printers are fully stocked with paper and ink
- Scheduling and maintenance of the Centers for club meetings and events. This includes having a key to both Centers and being responsible for the opening and closing of these spaces
- Collaborating with staff advisors to create and present workshops and study groups for BSS students to work toward the goals set by the College regarding complex Student Success initiatives
- Working independently with little supervision to manage the Centers
Additionally, student assistants will be asked to work closely with BSS faculty, staff, and the dean’s office as it relates to their work
The College of BSS Dean and Associate Dean will require different tasks for student assistants. These tasks are more infrequent than most tasks assigned by other office staff members or are incorporated with other office tasks/projects.
The tasks listed are just some of the projects student assistants are required to perform. Specific knowledge and experience of student success, Chico State organizational structure, resources and academics is preferred. Additionally, knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Publisher, Adobe Acrobat Pro, customer service, operating multi-line phone system, detail-oriented skills, and general front office demeanor will be considered helpful. All necessary training will be provided upon hire.
The person holding this position may be considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
