Urban Forestry Coordinator
Position Title: Urban Forestry Coordinator
Job Type: Permanent after a 90-day probationary hiring period, full-time hourly/non-exempt (40 hours a week).
Compensation: $60,000 a year. Benefits include: medical insurance (90% paid by employer), dental insurance (50%), retirement (1% 403b retirement contribution by employer), three weeks of vacation and one week of sick leave per year, plus paid holidays.
Location: Tree Davis’ office is in Davis, California. The Urban Forestry Coordinator will be working primarily throughout Davis, though will also be working from time to time in neighboring communities.
Overview: Tree Davis is seeking a new team member to serve in a critical role. The Urban Forestry Coordinator will participate with our tree planting and stewardship programs in the cities of Davis and West Sacramento and will also support our efforts in communities nearby. They will help ensure that we plant the best possible future forest, steward it to ensure success, and grow awareness and appreciation for the urban forest with residents in our communities. The role will also support our Climate-Ready Landscapes program with stewardship and event support.

Job Description: Under supervision from the Operations Manager, participate in the siting, planting and stewardship of trees and Climate-Ready Landscapes. Support and lead community volunteer activities. Lead the ongoing stewardship of our Climate-Ready Landscapes sites at the Memorial Grove in West Davis and N Street Park. Ensure that Tree Davis is following best practices related to urban forestry and Climate-Ready Landscapes.
Duties
Urban Forestry
- Site trees for planting: determine ideal species for location, determine where the tree(s) should be planted. When needed, create planting maps for approval from appropriate parties. Submit 811 tickets and react to feedback from utilities.
- Perform stewardship based on the specific needs of the trees and based on work orders: water, remove weeds, add mulch, remove stakes/replace stakes.
- Facilitate the participation of fellows and interns for stewardship, planting support and volunteer events.
- Manage Tribute Tree program: connect with constituents, ensure donations are made, facilitate planting events.
- Ensure that demonstration sites such as the Tree Davis Memorial Grove and N Street Park are maintained and exemplify best practices for Climate-Ready Landscapes.
Operations
- Ensure that the organization’s work trucks and equipment are maintained and are in good working order. Purchase tools and other equipment when needed.
- Procure planting materials and support the receipt of tree and plant deliveries, including quality inspections.
Engagement and Education
- Support Tree Davis’ volunteer events - ensure that volunteers are participating effectively and safely. Lead volunteer events as needed.
- When needed, support the creation of print and digital educational materials to grow community awareness about Climate-Trees and Landscapes
Administration
- Enter tree data such as stewardship updates, newly planted trees and volunteer participation into the Salesforce database.
- Other duties as assigned.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to drive a full sized truck with a utility trailer
- Professional or academic interest in arboriculture, horticulture, natural resource management, biology, or a related field
- Experience with tree planting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, tree identification
- Experience working independently
- Able to work weekdays and some weekends
- Able to do sustained physical labor, able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Able to work outdoors in inclement weather, especially hot temperatures
- Organization skills to manage logistics and coordination of the tree stewardship program
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable using Google Tools (Gmail, Docs, Earth, Maps, Sheets)
- Knows how to take initiative and knows how to problem solve
Preferred Qualifications
- International Society of Arboriculture certified
- Proficient in speaking Spanish
- Familiarity with irrigation systems, installation and maintenance
- Experience with Salesforce or other databases
- Experience with leading volunteer events
