Position Title: Camp Leaders – Camp Curiosity Summer 2024

Department: Education and Experiences

Reports to: Manager, Program Delivery

Full Time Position: Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, seasonal employment from June - August

FLSA Classification: Temporary, part-time, hourly, non-exempt

Salary Range: $16.00 - $16.50 per hour

Job Summary:

Do you love learning? Are you interested in sparking curiosity with children? Do you have a passion for science and technology? The SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity is seeking Summer Camp Leaders to encourage children attending weeklong camps to have fun while they are actively learning about science, technology, engineering, and math. Leaders are responsible for providing safe, friendly supervision directly to all children in their care, and indirectly to all children in the camp at all times. Leaders will lead lessons and facilitate learning on a range of topics in a variety of settings. This role contributes to the overall mission of MOSAC as a fun, active, and knowledgeable representative when communicating with both children and their families.

Camp runs from June 10, 2024 – August 9, 2024. All staff must be available for 7 of these weeks (Monday – Friday, 8am-5pm) and will be scheduled to work 5-7 weeks depending on availability and need. There will also be mandatory all-staff training from June 3-June 7.

Skills & Talents:

  • Experience working with children in informal learning or recreational environments
  • Flexible, dynamic, and active in learning while being patient, empathetic, and caring with children of various learning abilities
  • Understanding of the role of play and inquiry in learning
  • Good communication and team-work skills with all camp and MOSAC staff
  • Prompt, time-aware and able to supervise and organize groups of 24 children

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Leading groups of 24 children in activities (including classroom activities, art projects, group games, and engineering challenges) through a complete week of learning programs
  • Stimulating children’s curiosity and questioning, problem-solving and creativity, and active participation of all knowledge levels
  • Learning the objectives of assigned camps and follow daily program schedules
  • Adjusting activities within program schedules to adapt to the immediate circumstances, e.g. weather, physical location, coordination with other Camp Leaders
  • Supervising and supporting teen volunteers who support the camp groups
  • Communicating effectively and promptly with other camp staff and families as needed

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous summer camp or recreation program experience an asset

Physical Requirements:

  • May require standing and walking 75% of the time, lifting up to a maximum of 15 pounds, and other physical actions that include stooping, kneeling, bending, standing
  • Work will involve outdoor activities in addition to programs within the facility

This position is temporary, at-will, hourly, and part time. Salary range: $16.00 - $16.50 per hour. No benefits.
