Lifeguard (Fully Certified)

The Chico Area Recreation and Park District is looking to hire enthusiastic and energetic LIFEGUARDS and SWIM INSTRUCTORS to join our Summer 2024 Aquatics Team!

 

Under Supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of patrons and participants of all swimming activities at the aquatics facilities, ensuring that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Preventative lifeguarding and patron surveillance.
  • Enforcement of pool rules.
  • Perform water rescues and emergency assistance using appropriate life guarding techniques.
  • Administer CPR and First Aid as trained.
  • Complete safety and hazard checklists as required.
  • Successfully demonstrate lifeguarding skills during periodic drills and in-service.
  • Provide quality customer service; have positive communication and interaction with patrons, program participants, parents, customers, and co-workers, and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities for this Job Class is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Enrolled high school student in good standing with valid work permit (16 years old minimum) or equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. One year of college-level coursework in recreation, sports administration/management, physical education, or a closely related field is desirable. 

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Prior experience in aquatics programming desired
     

 

KNOWLEDGE OF: Basic knowledge of Preventative lifeguarding techniques


LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE: 

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current Lifeguard Training certification (or equivalent) per aquatic season requirements.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification (or equivalent) per aquatic season requirements. 
     
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a current First Aid for Public Safety Personnel -Title 22 certification (or higher) per aquatic season requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful background check is required prior to formal job offer being extended.

 

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness.
  • Frequent sitting, including in and around an elevated chair; walking or standing for long periods of time onslippery ground.
  • Occasional bending, twisting, kneeling, or squatting.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment with background noises.
  • Frequent hearing and talking in person; occasionally by phone.
  • Constant use of overall vision.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds; and occasionally up to 100pounds or more utilizing rescue equipment and techniques.
  • Frequent grasping, holding, and reaching, including reaching over head or shoulder.
  • Frequent participant, public, and co-worker contact.
  • Occasional exposure to loud noises and large groups of people.
     

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

  • Environment: Work is performed in an outdoor recreational environment subject to weather conditions, sunexposure, and water exposure, recreation-related field noise and/or street noise. Travel between sites may berequired.
  • Physical: Primary functions require walking, standing, running, stooping, reaching, bending, and climbing; light,moderate or heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
  • Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
