
Advising Intern
POSITION:

The advising internship is a fast-paced work environment where you will receive the opportunity to make a difference every day. The mission of advising is to provide an integrated array of effective academic advising services, resources, and planning tools for students. We are also committed to the professional development of our advising interns.
Advising interns must be available to work for a minimum of 12 hours during:
- Occasional evenings during peak advising times (varies by department)
- Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm (school year)
- Monday through Thursday 8 am-5 pm (summer)
- Students must be able to work in person
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advising interns are responsible for advising through both virtual and in-person settings. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Conduct one-on-one advising sessions on various topics to various populations (i.e., University policies, General Education and Graduation requirements, GPA advising, academic standing Undeclared Students, First Generation College Students, Transfer Students)
- Assist students in exploring majors/minors
- Navigate and explain University Policies and Procedures
- Provide support in university outreach (i.e., workshops, classroom presentations)
- Serve as the primary public contact for area of advising placement (i.e., front desk operations, answering phones, Live Chat)
- Support professional advisors with office duties, data collection, and research projects
- Assist other departments with advising
QUALIFICATIONS:
Advising interns work closely with the entire student population of California State University, Chico in various capacities and should possess a wide array of demonstrated qualities in order to effectively advise. Consequently, the advising internship is looking for students with the following skills:
REQUIRED:
Minimum of 3 semesters of availability. Students scheduled to graduate in fall 2023, spring 2024, or summer 2024 are not eligible. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possess strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills and work autonomously.
- Demonstrate compassion, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse students we serve.
Recommended:
- Applicants of all class levels are encouraged to apply. Applicants with a GPA of 2.5 or higher will be given priority consideration.
- Prior peer advising or leadership experience is highly desirable.

APPLICANTS, if hired:
**Are required to be available to work at least 12 hours per week. All other on campus employment must be disclosed prior to the start of employment.
**Will be required to attend a paid mandatory training that will take place during Winter Session. Approximate dates of training are January 3, 2024 through January 19, 2024.
**Interns will be enrolled in a 1 unit internship class each term for the duration of their employment. Intern are expected to earn a CR in this course; earning a No Credit could result in termination. Spring 2024 class will be held Tuesdays 5:15PM-6:30PM. (Only required for students placed in Academic Advising Programs)
**Will be given the opportunity to work during the summer. This is not required.
**Must be available to work in person.
**Area of internship placement will be in one of the following departments:
- Academic Advising Programs
- College of Agriculture
- College of Communication & Education
- College of Engineering, Computer Science, & Construction Management
- College of Humanities & Fine Arts
- College of Natural Sciences
- Intercollegiate Athletics
- Student Support Services (TRIO)
