Research Associate
Berkeley Lab’s (LBNL) Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging Division (MBIB) has an opening for a Research Associate to join Polyzos Lab.
In this exciting role, you will perform semi-routine research assignments including directed benchtop experiments involving mammalian cell culture, recombinant DNA vectors, fluorescent imaging, and minimal protein analysis (Western blot, etc..). The purpose of this work is to optimize an in vivo method to study DNA oxidation and DNA damage, with applicability in the research of oxidative DNA damage during neurodegeneration.
This position has an anticipated start date of October 1, 2023.
What You Will Do:
Perform data collection and process.
Conduct basic analysis using DNA vectors, mammalian cell lines, mouse tissue, and fluorescence imaging.
Participate in and present results at group meetings.
Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific notebook of all experiments performed to ensure other members are able to replicate the results.
What is Required:
A minimum of 1 year of related experience with Molecular Biology techniques.
Experience with DNA and plasmid vector laboratory techniques (i.e., bacterial amplification, transfection, agarose gel analysis, etc.).
Experience with mammalian cell culture (i.e., aseptic technique, cryopreservation, cell culture, transfection, etc.).
Experience using fluorescence microscopy.
Proficient computer skills including familiarity using a PC or Mac, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Applications, etc.
Excellent organizational skills including a strong attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to organize, record, and document accurate records.
Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a diverse and collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Biology, Bioengineering, Neuroscience, or a related field.
Familiarity with scientific data analysis (i.e., creating graphs, tables, and performing basic statistics).
Experience with protein biology (Western Blot, etc.).

This is a full time, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime, 14 month, Term (benefits eligible) appointment with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
This position has a targeted salary range of $23.79-$33.29 per hour for job code 381.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
