CalFresh Healthy Living Student Intern – Level IV

The goal of the CalFresh Healthy Living Program is to prevent chronic diseases and improve food security among persons eligible for CalFresh. The program focuses on implementing education, policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change strategies to: increase access to, and consumption of, affordable healthy food and beverages and decrease sedentary behavior. The program implements interventions in a variety of settings including schools, community centers, retail establishments, farmers markets.

Position Summary/Class Description Under supervision, to assist in the planning and implementation of health education activities and policy, systems, and environmental change strategies of the CalFresh Healthy Living Program in the Healthy Communities Branch of the Public Health Department.

Typical Tasks include
• Participates in the planning and implementation of the CalFresh Healthy Living program. Services are directed toward the CalFresh Eligible population (up to 185% of Federal Poverty Level).
• Assists in the collection of data from CalFresh eligible residents including: conducting site-level assessment questionnaires at schools or retail locations; client surveys at schools, retail locations or farmer’s markets; park assessments.
• Prepares health education and media materials which may include press releases, newsletter articles, social media posts, handouts, written toolkits, promotional announcements for radio/voice/print.
• Develops educational materials to support program objectives, as well as the needs of the CalFresh eligible population throughout the county.
• Plans and conducts nutrition and physical activity education and presents education materials to support education, for students, parents, school staff and community partners (virtual and inperson).
• Plans and conducts technical assistance and training on policy, systems and environmental change strategies related to implementation of nutrition and physical activity promotion for schools, retail, farmers’ markets, and community organizations.
• Plans and conducts workshops for community partners or community members on physical activity programming and implementing nutrition policy
• Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with parents, school staff, community members and community organizations to promote nutrition/physical activity
• Assists in the planning and implementation of community events by securing speakers/educators and health education literature/materials to promote food security or nutrition (e.g. ReThink Your Drink Day.)
• Prepares written report of activities.
• Other duties as needed. Special Qualifications/Skills Possess a valid California Class C driver’s license. Must be able to lift 20 pounds.

Minimum Requirements and Education/Experience Must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program. Must have an overall grade point average of at least 2.5 on a four-point scale. Experience in health education. Great public speaking skills. Basic computer skills required (MS Office Suite). Knowledge and experience working with low-income communities is a plus. Must be available during the typical workday (8am to 5pm) but also occasional evening and weekend hours.
