The Chico State University Communications department is looking for a highly motivated and resourceful student employee who is passionate about promoting the Chico State brand, storytelling, and crafting the right message to connect with current and future students, alumni, faculty and staff and donors.

Ideal candidates are strong writers, able to think creatively about marketing and messaging, and passionate about all the things that make Chico State special.

As a public relations student-employee, you’ll get full exposure to daily life in a higher education communications department. Specific responsibilities include:

MEDIA RELATIONS AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH
  • Developing media lists
  • Tracking media coverage
  • Writing email content that will be distributed to Chico State students and employees
  • Support on media pitching – including writing media pitches and press releases, and outreach to reporters.
  • Brainstorming PR-worthy ideas and pitch angles
  • Keeping a pulse on the latest in the industry, including higher education trends and what reporters are covering
  • Occasional help with on- and off-campus events

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:
  • Proven writing skills
  • A strong editor of your own, and others writing
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • An ability to multi-task, work independently and be self-directed
  • An understanding of basic marketing and media relations concepts
  • A strong grasp of social media platforms such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and more.
  • An ability to work in a dynamic environment, with rapidly changing priorities
  • Flexibility and willingness to perform tasks both large and small

This role will be reviewed per semester for approval to continue on through May 2023. Generally, students that are completing their assignments and showing a passion for the work and a collaborative attitude will continue in this role through May 2023. This role begins this Summer on August 15.
